My child has never done Yoga before what should they expect?
Yoga is none competitive so there is no need for your son or daughter to feel concerned about being new in the class. Yoga by nature is an inclusive practice and your child will be made to feel very welcome and there is usually a mixture of abilities in a class. Everyone is encouraged to work at their own ability and level.
Can yoga help my child calm down and focus?
Yoga helps calm the nervous system down by developing relaxation and breathing techniques.
We immediately recognise a sense of well-being, through an improved body awareness, together with deeper breathing and an ability to relax more easily. there is often an increase in energy and a feeling of wellbeing, mental clarity and a general feeling of calmness and control.
How does children’s yoga differ from an adults class?
The main difference is that we do not hold the postures for long and we use a number of techniques to engage the young people; music, props, games in an age appropriate way.
They are not expected to be silent and contemplative although their is plenty of opportunity to explore their experiences with reflection and awareness.
What are the benefits of practising yoga and mindfulness from an early age and adolescence ?
The practice of yoga helps develop good posture, strength, flexibility, and stamina. However the ultimate benefit of yoga is the sense of balance both mentally and physically. Yoga unlike many physical activities allows children to take their attention inwards bringing the mind, body and breath in to harmony.
All of which are highly beneficial to introduce at an early age.
What should my child wear and do they require any special equipment ?
We suggest something loose and comfortable to wear that allows freedom of movement. Yoga is generally done in bare feet but we suggest bringing socks to wear especially during relaxation.
Why is their pair work/group poses in children/teen yoga?
Although yoga has been practised for years traditionally on your own mat individually, children however love to connect and work together and working collaboratively is encouraged and a great opportunity to practice cooperation. kindness and compassion. All important life lesson, whilst still allowing plenty of time to work at ones own pace and space.
Are the children expected to be quiet and reflective?
In my experience they love ‘Savasana’ or ‘do nothing’ pose. There aren’t many moments in the day when we are invited to simple ‘be’ and do nothing whilst being guided, or listening to relaxing music or a story.
However, laughter and fun are encouraged down dogs, go for a walk and cows are heard mooing. Do not expect just to hear breathing!
What can my child expect from a class?
The majority of classes run for either 45min or an hour. Workshops vary depending on age and content covered.
Concepts and themes are interwoven through the class, but essentially all classes begin with a group game or circle activity (time to allow everyone to settle down).
They all start with a warm up followed by yoga poses ( asanas) and a sequence ( vinyasa). Breath work ( pranayama) an essential part of the class is incorporated throughout and all classes end with a relaxation.
Is Yoga and mindfulness a religion?
No, Yoga is not a religion and all of our curriculum is taught in a secular way with an emphasis on traditional values of kindness, generosity, honesty, respecting gratitude to name but a few.
